Are there certain supplies my child should have for school?

Yes. Your child should have a backpack (with your child’s name on it) to carry things back and forth from school each day. One that opens and closes with a zipper is best. Also, it’s a good idea to leave a change of your child’s clothes in the classroom in case of an accident. If he/she wears diapers or pull-ups, please send several in his/her backpack each day and a box of wipes for us to keep in our changing room area. The classroom teacher will send home a list of special supplies if needed.

Can I visit my child's classroom?

You are welcome to visit your child’s classroom anytime. Just sign in the classroom on the day of your visit. Please remember that the teacher is involved in teaching all of the children in the classroom and may not have time for lengthy conversations. If you would like, the staff will be happy to talk and answer your questions when the class time is over. If you are interested in volunteering to work in the classroom on a regular basis, please contact your child’s teacher for further information.

How will the Flowing Wells School District assess my child’s progress and development?

We work closely with the Arizona Department of Education Early Childhood Division, Arizona Department of Health Services as well as the National Association for the Education of Young Childhood to be able to properly assess the needs of your child. We use the Galileo Pre-K assessment tool three times per year (October, February and May). You will receive an update of your child’s progress. Our center will also continue to use a developmental checklist to determine your child’s progress of readiness skills at the beginning and the end of the school year.

Does the Emily Meschter Early Learning Center have a dress code?

We discourage our students from having items in school that promote super-heroes. We have found that young children demonstrate more aggressive behavior and increased aggressive attitudes when they interact with super-hero items at school. Such items would include: Spiderman, Superman, Power Puff Girls, professional wrestlers, and Power Rangers, although this list is not all inclusive. Our staff is dedicated to providing your child with positive experiences throughout his/her preschool day. If you have any questions or concerns, please talk to your child’s teacher or the program director.

What is the purpose of a Home Visit?

The purpose of the home visit is for the school visitors to work and talk with the parent and the preschool child. It gives you, the parent/guardian, an opportunity to tell us what questions and concerns you have. It also gives us, the school, a chance to do the same. It allows us the opportunity to complete necessary paperwork or forms, and it gives the child the chance to share in an enjoyable, planned activity in which he/she is the center of attention.

Is there a school nurse available in case my preschool child needs medical attention?

Yes. There is a health assistant on campus that will help your child if he/she gets a minor injury. The health assistant is also there in case your child needs to take medication during the time he/she is at school. The health assistant will only give medication to the child with the doctor’s directions and parental permission. All medications must be stored in the health office and must be in its original container with the appropriate instructions. Parents must also complete an authorization form before the nurse can dispense any medication.
